First Look: Alex Garland returns with ‘Men’

Alex Garland has carved out quite the career thus far after starting out as an author (The Beach). Starting with the brilliant Ex Machina, Alex quickly became a divisive filmmaker. You either love his work, or you don’t. I am very much in the first camp, as his follow up to Ex Machina, Annihilation (adapted from Jeff VanDeMeer’s novel of the same name) was one of my best films of 2018.

That was followed up with Devs, Alex’s first foray into television. While not as strong as his two previous works, Devs still contained a lot of the trademark things that made it an Alex Garland work.

Now we have our first look at Mr. Garland’s latest project, Men. Not much is known other than it’s a return to A24 for Alex (Ex Machina was an A24 release) and stars the newly Oscar nomiated Jessie Buckley in the lead role. Below is a brief synopsis:

In the aftermath of a personal tragedy, Harper (Buckley) retreats alone to the beautiful English countryside, hoping to have found a place to heal. But someone or something from the surrounding woods appears to be stalking her. What begins as simmering dread becomes a fully-formed nightmare, inhabited by her darkest memories and fears in Garland’s feverish, shape-shifting new horror film.
